The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office is actively patrolling areas that are evacuated for the Eagle Creek Fire.
Sheriff Mike Reese says officials managing the fire gave them the name and contact information of a man who took fire gear and claimed to be a firefighter.
Deputies knew the man and he wasn't part of the firefighting effort. They arrested 23-year-old Cody Cunningham, of Troutdale, on charges of Theft by Deception and Parole Violation.
They suspect he was going to use the fire gear to get into evacuated areas with the intent of theft.
The Sheriff's Office is using State Police and Portland Police to enhance patrols in the evacuated areas.
