Driver Tries To Run Down Deputy

A man was arrested early Saturday morning on multiple charges after he attempted to elude multiple law enforcement officers and tried to run over a Forest Grove Police sergeant. No one was seriously injured.

On Friday, November 24, 2017 at 11:26 p.m., Washington County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a hit and run crash at NW Banks Road and NW Sellers Road in the city of Banks. It was reported that a vehicle crashed into a power pole and then drove away from the location.

A few minutes later, a Forest Grove Police sergeant spotted the vehicle, a 1994 Jeep Cherokee, as it entered the city of Forest Grove. The driver refused to stop and deputies and officers from the Washington County Sheriff's Office, Forest Grove Police Department and Cornelius Police Department pursued it.

At one point, the suspect vehicle turned onto a dead-end road near Cedar Street and 24th Avenue. The vehicle turned around and faced the Forest Grove Police sergeant head-on. The sergeant got out of his patrol car and gave commands for the driver to exit the Jeep. Instead of complying, the driver of the Jeep drove straight at the sergeant. Fortunately, the sergeant was not struck. After another short pursuit, the driver crashed into a yard and fled on foot. He was captured by officers.

Joseph E. Eison, 20, of Hillsboro, was arrested for attempted assault in the first degree, assault in the fourth degree, felony fleeing or attempting to elude police officers, misdemeanor fleeing or attempting to elude police officers, driving under the influence of intoxicants, unlawful use of weapon, two counts of misdemeanor hit and run, criminal mischief in the second degree, escape in the third degree, resisting arrest and a misdemeanor warrant from Yamhill County.

Eison sustained minor injuries and was medically cleared at a local hospital before being lodged at the Washington County Jail. No officers or deputies were injured.
