THIRD DOWN AND A WAR TO GO written by Terry Frei (Wisconsin Historical Society Press $18.95 paperback 288 pages). Former Oregon sportswriter Terry Frei pays tribute to his father (former Oregon football coach) Jerry Frei by telling the story of the 1942 Wisconsin football team. A large number of Badgers players interupted their college educations and playing careers to fight for their country in World War ll. Some never returned as they paid the ultimate price in the war, while others were changed forever by their war experiences. Terry Frei, now a writer for ESPN.com, captures the feelings of those young men who chose to go off to fight because it was simply the right thing to do. Frei has updated the paperback edition of Third Down because some of the players and sources had passed away since the hard cover was published. Frei says since orginally publishing the book additional stories about the men had come to light so he has added those stories, making this updated edition a different read than the hard-cover edition. It's a fantastic book that gives credit to a few of the men who gave their time, effort, and lives to fight for the USA in World War ll.
