During our first days on the air together we were talking about a long-standing monthly Portland bike ride which was known for attracting a certain class of riders. Someone in the newsroom called the group a “cult-like’ gathering, to which one of the bikers took exception and launched into an on-air tirade upset about Mark & Dave calling them a cult. This person took to the air, Internet, newspaper, and anyone who would listen upset that Mark & Dave would refer to riders as a Cult. We, on the other hand, took the high road and insisted that there are “good” cults. We even went so far as to look up the dictionary definition of cult and found this definition of affirmation:

 

 

If that doesn’t describe Mark & Dave listeners, we don’t know what does! That very day we started taking names and email addresses of persons interested in joining our Cult. A Cult dedicated to vitriol-free radio, where we can discuss hot-topic stories and ideas without the hating, shouting, name calling, belittling -- without an agenda. The only agenda is to learn and have fun. With that, the Mark & Dave Cult was born. 440 listeners became Cult members that first day. Now they are committed by the thousands.
